2016 Carignan, Redwood Valley
We ventured to beautiful Mendocino County, just north of Sonoma, to discover the latest addition to the Corner 103 wine family: Carignan. Pronounced “care-in-yen,” this red varietal comes from Southern France, particularly the Languedoc regions, where it is often used in rich red blends. We loved the earthy, savoriness of this wine so much that we had to create a single varietal selection for you.
This Carignan, crafted with care from old vine grapes from the Redwood Valley AVA, represents this hard-to-find varietal beautifully. We prefer to use old vine Carignan, versus newly planted, as it creates lower yields, yet more powerful, lush fruit. As keeping with all Corner 103 wines, this Carignan is about quality, not quantity.
It’s a perfect wine for those who enjoy medium body reds, such as Zinfandel, Merlot or Beaujolais. It’s aromatic and full of savory scents and tastes, such as cranberry sauce, raspberry jam, baking spice and bacon. Yes, bacon. How can you go wrong with a wine like that? Our Carignan has light tannins, making it a great wine to drink now or age for later.
