One of our most award winning wines, our 2012 Merlot from Alexander Valley is quickly becoming a Corner 103 classic. In French, Merlot translates to “the little blackbird” and just like a migrating blackbird, Merlot has returned after being overshadowed by Pinot Noir for many years. It is considered one of the “must drink” wine varietals of 2017.
Vineyards that once grew Cabernet Sauvignon in Alexander Valley are now being replaced by Merlot to reflect the varietals’ growing popularity. Located in Northern Sonoma County, the Alexander AVA is one of the hottest wine growing regions in the County. This tough climate makes for a perfect place for Merlot to thrive.
Our 2012 Merlot has been recognized as one of the best in the country, scoring 90 points in Wine Enthusiast and taking home numerous awards, including from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
It’s a beautifully balanced Merlot, with a light, fruity red berry and cherry nose complemented by a well-structured mouth of blackberry, cherry, and chocolate.

Notably because of its hot weather and volcanic soils, Alexander Valley is the most planted AVA in Sonoma County. Bordeaux varietals thrive here, especially Merlot varieties that prefer gravel and sandy soils.
We produced 426 cases of this wine. The grapes were harvested on October 14, 2014 and spent 22 months in 100% French oak barrels. Bottled on August 20, 2014, this wine has seen significant bottle age that ensures the wine is great to drink now or in ten years.
Food Pairing Notes
Merlot is one of the most food friendly wines grapes. Spaghetti and meatballs is one of our favorite pairings. Merlot brings out the savory flavor of the meatballs and the tomato sauce cuts through the acidity of the Merlot perfectly. It also pairs great with grilled steak, spiced lamb burgers, roasted chicken, and beef stew. It's also makes a great match for Gouda, Gruyere, and Pecorino Toscano cheeses.
